Re-issuance of Resident Card (在留カード) in Japan

Resident Card, re-issuance in Japan

“What to do if you lost your Japanese Resident Card (在留カード) or if you need to modify any data on it.”

Introduction:

We will see 2 cases where you may need to ask for a new Resident Card:

  • Case 1: You lost your Resident Card and you need to expedite a new one.
  • Case 2: You need to modify the data on it (ex: name is not correct) or voluntary want to renew it.

Case 1: Japanese Resident Card Lost

You will need the following documentation to handover at immigration:

In some cases or if you are doing this for a familiar or person under your protection:

  • Residence Record (住民票 – Juminhyo)

Case 2: Modify your Japanese Resident Card or voluntary renew.

ℹ️ In my case, I went for my son, as in my country we have 2 family names, and when we register our son at city hall they put both family names as a single family name combining both of them, so when I got the first passport of my son I went through this process.

You will need the following documentation to handover at immigration:

Workflow

After you got all the documentation you will have to go to immigration office:

In Tokyo office (Only example I know) is in counter D2 at second floor.

The workflow is the following:

  1. You handover the documentation and they will ask to wait while they check.
  2. If everything is correct, they will ask again to wait for a few Hours (This depends on how busy they are, and how late you go there) while they create the new card.
  3. When the card is finished they will call you at counter D1 and ask you to get the stamp at conbini in the first floor for 1600¥ value.
⚠️ Don’t recommend to buy the stamp in advance, price may be subject to change, and if they find something unusual they may not expedite the card until the issue is fixed and may have different cost.
  4. After give back the stamp, they will give you the new Resident Card.
